Deal Porters

A sculpture to commemorate the hard work of the porters who handled the huge amounts of timber, mainly from Scandinavia, which were imported through London's Surrey Docks. One might wonder why they were 'Surrey Docks' when currently Surrey county starts 10+ miles away. When the docks were built London itself was much smaller and what are now called the Home Counties reached right into what are now the Inner London Boroughs.
The porters carried the lengths of timber, seen in this sculpture, on their backs, between the ships and the storage areas. The second man was there to help position the timber or deal.
