UK Road Tax and Driving Licence
1957 road tax disc issued by Essex County Council for £12/10. U.K. Driving licence issued 11June, 1936. June 1936 was the start of UK driving tests becoming compulsory. The red book licence lasted until March 1973. Then became a computer printout and revised again in 1992, 1998, and 2016.
On Dec 4,2017 the driving test will be amended to include using a sat nav.

Very interesting.
I remember asking my great-grandfather in 1978 how old he was when he past his test. he said 'Never'! which is not surprising when he was born in 1884!

I'm sure there were many drivers in the 70s and 89s who had never taken a test. In the early days you just needed a doctor's note to say you were fit to drive. Then down to the local council offices who'd then issue your driving licence. The one above was issued by the Middlesex County Council to a chap in Sunbury on Thames, as county councils then took over issuing licences. Mine was issued by the East Sussex County Council in 1969.

Such memories, sadly, I remember having one and the old annual vehicle licence/road tax in a similar small registration book with the old official PO stamp for each paid entry, simpler times!

My old Austin 10 ( pic below) still had its original 1939 log book--and the West Yorkshire records showing the number plate being issued then.
