Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus)(m) 24-8-2015 ! The first this year here !

First lone male sighted here this year and has been here all day feeding on False Sunflowers. He has a very bad tear in his right wing but seems otherwise in good condition . This is an early sighting compared to the past 3 years.

Rare that another male will do this damage.... far more likely he snagged on something... the pieces was still there.... it was much like a thorn tear.

No they dont heal. This will be it till he can fly no more. Same for alll butterflies... they "wear out'.

BUT.. even with terrible injuries like this.. they go on very well indeed for a fair time.
