Salted paper print of a calotype.
7x11 inch image on 9x13 Strathmore 500 drawing paper.

Toned in gold borax and platinum. Sorry I can't get the color right... it's subtle and nice: midtones remind me of the color with vinegar instead of citric acid in the silver nitrate. The darkest shadows were just starting to turn a sooty black when I stopped the toning.

Ned where do you get your toners from.....need to get some gold toner but know its expensive and unsure as to being able to ship it here.....

Graham, I got the gold chloride and potassium chloroplatinite from Bostick and Sullivan. I don't know if they ship internationally, and I'm sure it would cost a lot to get it to you. Ellie Young who wrote about salt printing has a place called Gold Street Studios in Australia that has supplies and might have more reasonable postage to you.

They are expensive at first, especially the platinum, but if you are careful and only make as much as you need for each print, the cost per print is low, less than 20 cents each. I avoided buying platinum until one day I sat down and calculated how much it costs per print and it's actually slightly less than gold toning!

If you get some, let me know and I'll write out some tips... some of the instructions on the internet don't warn you that some of the toners don't keep well, so it's not a good idea to make a big batch. The stock gold chloride and chlorplatinite solutions keep indefinitely. I could also help choose a few other chemicals that will give you a good range of different toners once you have the gold chloride.
