Esther, this is not intended to be "funny." The sculpture is on the site of the former Foundling Hospital, an institution founded in 1739 to provide care and shelter to babies whose mothers were at risk of abandoning them due to lack of financial, physical or emotional resources. Mothers often left little tokens -- a piece of clothing or a small object -- with their baby in order to be reunited with the correct infant should that become possible. This little mitten is about loss -- a lost baby object and, more broadly, the loss of the bond between mother and child. It is poignant, touching and sad. I'm sorry you find it humorous.
