This building replaced the Old Fox & Crown pub. The story goes that Queen Victoria was heading downhill in a horse-drawn carriage in 1837. The horses bolted, putting the Queen in great danger. The landlord of the pub ran out and was able to stop the horses. In gratitude, Queen Victoria presented him with a large wooden carving of her coat of arms that now resides in the Highgate Literary & Scientific Institution. www.londonremembers.com/memorials/queen-victoria-s-shock
