It was never a fortress...
And it was burned and destroyed during WWII in 1939 and 1944.
Have a look:

I wish I could find my Dad's old negatives... Shots taken around 1960.
There was no castle then, debris removed. Several fragments left for evidence.
I was a small kid then but I remember the one visible at the bottom-right frame of the postcard collage.
