OK, the square addiction origins seem rather obvious.
For Ansel Adams it was a Kodak Brownie Box camera. Am I right about it?
For me (not that I dare compare to The Master) it was a Polish WZFO Start 6x6 TLR camera.
As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.
Cropping habits are different. Or maybe not so much.
When I was a kid negatives were pricey (in Poland). One learned to use and value every fraction of a square inch of a frame.
Digital technology allows for more carelessness ;)

You said that well, Marta, I agree. This reminds me how the 'kids' born after the transition to digital photography, go back and use film. The often say how much film allows them to fill the frame with more care.
