Black Figure Amphora Attributed to the Swing Painter in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, June 2018

Black-Figure Amphora (Storage Vessel) (Primary Title)
attributed to, Swing Painter (Artist)
Date: ca. 535 B.C.
Culture: Greek (Attic)
Category: Ceramics
Containers-Vessels
Medium: terracotta
Collection: Ancient Art
Dimensions: Overall: 15 1/4 × 10 1/2 in. (38.74 × 26.67 cm)
Object Number: 62.1.2
About 150 vases have been attributed to the Swing Painter, who takes his name from a depiction of a woman on a swing. His style can often be recognized by his use of added color (e.g., white and matte red) and the puppetlike style of his figures. His vases range in quality, but he explored many unusual themes, often with humor, such as this depiction of a mare rolling on the ground beneath two rearing horses.
