Heroic Statue Restored with the Head of Aelius Caesar in the Louvre, June 2014

Heroic statue supplemented with a portrait of Lucius Aelius (adopted by Hadrian in AD 136, died AD 138)
Marble
H. 2 m
The antique head did not originally belong to the statue and probably dates from AD 136. The draped body is shown half-naked, a motif characteristic of Greek gods and heros and Roman emperors (see the Gabii “Germanicus”, Ma 1238).
Purchased in 1861
Department of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities
Inventaire Cp 6438
(n° usuel Ma 1167)
