Nude in an Armchair by Picasso in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, November 2008

Artist: Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973)
Title: Woman in an Armchair
Date: 1909–10
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 32 x 25 3/4in. (81.3 x 65.4cm)
Classification: Paintings
Credit Line: The Mr. and Mrs. Klaus G. Perls Collection, 1997
Accession Number: 1997.149.7
Rights and Reproduction: © 2010 Estate of Pablo Picasso / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York
Description:
After working on a series of portraits of his companion Fernande Olivier (1881-1966), Picasso changed models in works that, as here, fused the faceted figure and ambient space. The marriage of light and space in Nude in an Armchair would culminate in a series of portraits of dealers and collectors, most notably Picasso's Portrait of Vollard (1910; Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow).
