Ceramic Bread Stamp in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2010

Ceramic Bread Stamp in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2010
Ceramic Bread Stamp
Byzantine, possibly from Constantinople
Made 500-900
Inscribed in Greek in reverse: "IC XC NI KA"

Accession # 1999.519.17

When pressed into a loaf of uncooked bread, the stamp would have left the mark "Jesus Christ Victorious." Bread identified by such stamps was used for the consecrated bread in the Divine Liturgy (Eucharist.)

Text from the Metropolitan Museum of Art label.
