Preserved with the relief are the separately carved pilasters that accompanied it on an altar that stood in the old basilica of St. Peter's, Rome. The altar, with figures of the apostles Paul (left), Peter (center), and Andrew (right), was erected in 1491 at the expense of a French prelate Guillaume du Perrier and was dismantled in 1606 when the basilica was enlarged.
