Portrait of a Bearded Man in the Princeton University Art Museum, August 2009

Portrait of a Bearded Man in the Princeton University Art Museum, August 2009
Portrait of a Bearded Man
Roman, Antonine, ca. AD 180
Marble

# Y1989-26

Although damaged, the high quality of this portrait is evident in the modeling of the broad face and the crisp carving of the eyes and brows. The man's beard and curly hair, as well as his dreamy expression, point to a date in the Antonine period, probably in the reign of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, whose own portrait is exhibited nearby.
