Portrait Statue of a Trajanic Woman in the Princeton University Art Museum, August 2009

Portrait Statue of a Trajanic Woman in the Princeton University Art Museum, August 2009
Portrait Statue of a Woman
Roman, Trajanic, AD 98-117
Body in Pentelic marble; the head probably Parian marble

# Y1980-34

The body of this richly clad, older woman was carved separately from the head. The head was carved from a different marble and inserted into a hole at the neck; care was taken to match the folds of the mantle pulled up over the back of the head. The stripes on top of the head are probably part of a folded kerchief, an unusal accessory. The strap on the woman's right shoulder is part of a stola, a garment that identifies her as a Roman matron, a married woman possessing all the rights of a Roman citizen.
