Two Etruscan Helmets in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Two Etruscan Helmets in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Two Helmets
Etruscan, 500-400 BC
Bronze

Inventory # 73.AC.33-34

Helmets of this shape, known as Negau type, were worn by Etruscan hoplites (foot soldiers). The palmette with the hole in the center was used to attach a crest along the ridgeline. On both helmets, the hooks positioned above the rims held straps for stabilizing crests.
