Max Gate

Thomas Hardy's home in Dorchester. It's by the site of a former tollbooth on a turnpike road, which was at some time manned famously by a gentleman called Mack, hence "Mack's Gate". Hardy seems to have felt "Max Gate" more rakish! The National Trust now owns the house and it is open to the public at certain times. It is also inhabited by a tenant who very kindly showed us some of the rooms and chatted about the house and the wider world. It made for a lovely personal visit.

You'll need to click on "all sizes", above, and choose a larger size. The people who run the pedalo hire went out with some pedalos tied together and... stood around making phone calls on them.

Portland harbour

The two large blocks of concrete sitting next to each other on the right of the picture are "Mulberry harbours", which were constructed in large numbers and towed over to assist with offloading on the beaches during the D-Day landings in Normandy. At the top left is Chesil Beach, which also has a wartime connection — the lagoon was used for testing of Barnes Wallace's "bouncing bomb".
