Houseboats (+PiPs)

Houseboats (+PiPs)
There is a large Houseboat community on the seafront at Shoreham-by-Sea, in West Sussex. Strangely they are situated almost immediately in front of a housing estate. I was going to walk over the bridge to get a closer look, but I've read that (probably quite rightly) the residents of the houseboats aren't keen on people gawking at them and taking photos.

These are taken at 100mm (which was the longest zoom I had with me) and considerably cropped. Best viewed large, I think.

The large vessel looks as if it's new to the site........ and it seems to having a lot of work done to it.

A very interesting set of images all very well captured especially at full zoom Keith,
The large boat has the look of an ex military vessel while the others appear all have had large extensions, do they ever float or are they permanently on land?
I note the large boat is facing away from the water and looks not to have floated in,

Thanks Roger...........it's a very strange community. The houseboats are actually on tidal mudflats, so they will be floating at high tides. I've absolutely no idea how the large boat got there, but I doubt it was overland.

I was told that some of them are available on Airbnb :-))

Glad you like these.............I'm seriously considering going back for a closer look at some time (when it's a bit cooler).

That is very unusual to see, in front of a housing estate! I guess they must exist amicably together! A very interesting series Keith, and very good pictures too. I was wondering the same as Roger, as to whether they ever float? I don't think I would mind looking out on the boats, and to be so close to the river, is wonderful anyway.

It is indeed............it seems both communities have been thee for some time, so they must all get on OK. As I've just said to Roger, the. houseboat are located on tidal mudflats, so I assume they must float on the tides.

Ha, ha............houseboats are quite common here Judite both on canals and by the sea. This is an unusual community though as they are so close to "normal" houses.

I must say that I wouldn't enjoy having my houseboat so near houses, most people with houseboats usually place their boats on canals in the countryside. Thanks for the information on this site too.

Yes, it's quite a strange set up,.........but the houseboats have apparently been there for years, so they must all get on together!

I spent about two years living in a mobile home, moving around the North Island. I loved our bus and didn't really want to move back into a house afterward. However, I think a permanent boat housing area should be away from permanent housing. It could affect the value of the nearby properties. Interesting shots all the same!

You've led an interesting life Eunice................it must have been great to just move on when you fancied it.

It's an odd set up here...........but the houseboats have been there for years so both communities must get on OK. I doubt house prices come into the equation as I think must houses are owned by housing associations and are rented and not purchased.

I agree Gudrun............it's quite an odd set up, but the houseboats have apparently been there for years and years, so I'm guessing everyone must get on OK.

Gotcha'.. on the houseboats there thanks Keith,../ that type of crane always interests me in the fact that having no counter balance,. the jib must put a tremendous strain on that single wire..

Thanks for commenting as always David.............the crane does look a bit odd, but I'm assuming it's been safety tested for whatever it has to lift. The boat would have been floated in, not craned, but I have no idea what it is being used for. I'm having a good weekend so far........hope you are too!

It is a bit odd...............but everyone seems to get along together..............I think some of the houseboats have been there since the 60s, but not sure about the houses.

As far as I know these are all occupied............in fact a few of them are available as airbnb accommodation! The community has been there for years!

At the time I took these shots the houseboats are sitting on tidal mudflats, so they will float when the tide comes in. I doubt that any of them are truly seaworthy though :-)
