Juniper losings its needles


I grew up calling this tree "juniper." That's the most common name in these parts for it: Larix laricina, I think. It's known by a half-dozen other local names elsewhere in North America. Tamarack. hackmatack. And so on.
Whatever it's called, it is losing its needles this week around here, making the stands of it stand out like no other needly tree.
