John W Gates

Another rare Borucki photo without a caption. To all appearances it was taken at the same time and place as last week's photo of Midland Prince; I'm guessing around 1950.
John W Gates was a 500 footer, part of the Steel Trust's original Great Lakes Fleet launched in 1900. This ship was retired in 1961.
The person John W. Gates was president of several barbed wire firms that were ultimately incorporated into the Steel Corp; in fact, his 1890s merger activities built the legal foundation for the vast merger which was United States Steel.
