I think that's because I use a matt screen (I cannot cope with the glossy ones), and always with some tungsten light nearby to neutralise it. My XP notebooks, which I use for photo-editing, are also matt and set to the lowest possible brightness.
Incidentally, I came across the particular XP notebook that had gone dead after I spilt tea on it. It now starts up and appears to be working again, apart from the cursor showing up as a mottled square.
