On the Levels

Somerset Levels looking east along the King's Sedgemoor Drain from Greylakes Bridge,This is an artificial drainage channel which diverts the River Cary in Somerset, England along the southern flank of the Polden Hills, to discharge into the River Parrett at Dunball near Bridgwater. As the name suggests, the channel is used to help drain the peat moors of King's Sedgemoor.

Drain doesn't sound too exciting, but round here drainage channels are sometimes termed sewers as in Lottbridge Sewer in Eastbourne.

When I lived in Somerset, apart from travelling across them on the S&D I never ventured into the Levels that much. I would appreciate them that much more now.

If the water levels rise any higher pumps will start to maintain or lower the level.
The whole area relies on pumps.
