3108 Darling Harbour 1970
Shunting in Darling Harbour in 1970 was largely done by steam locos. This class was originally introduced as tank locos for suburban train working. See adjacent photo for original appearance. After Sydney electrification in the 1920s around half were converted to tender types as shown here. In this form they were used extensively for branch line working. Sometime in 1970.

This area has been redeveloped into an entertainment precinct. A light rail system has utilised some of the former goods line route.

Darling Harbour was the major freight port area in Sydney Harbour from the early days of Sydney until containerisation of freight transport. This meant large rail yards system developed here with a dedicated freight rail network which kept much of the freight out of the passenger carrying network.

Since the 70s shipping has moved to Port Botany at Botany Bay and in the 80s this area was developed into an entertainment, accommodation and recreation precinct at the edge of the CBD.

I grew up in Brisbane near the railway yards where the NSW locos such as this were a daily sight. Nostalgia indeed!

Thanks George. That explains why you once complimented a photo of mine by loco class, Southern Downs' C17.
