Jersey 084 Cobar area

Jersey 084 Cobar area
Remains of a part privately erected telephone line. One insulated wire and earth return creates the circuit between the exchange and the phone. Mouse over to see the note. Click on photo to enlarge. This technology was used to provide telephone service to remote places in the days of manual (magneto) telephone exchanges.

This is just North of the Moomba - Sydney pipeline ROW near 'The Cottage' site in an area South West of Cobar NSW.

Thanks Annemarie. There are many thousands of square kilometres of red soil. It becomes first very slippery when it rains and as it dries out it becomes extremely sticky.

Thanks David. There was some of this in use round NSW when I was a trainee tech and first out of my time. I was in a group which tested cables and lines between exchanges and sometimes had to setup extra circuitry to get the lengths of underground cable to work at the distance the simple system above didn't have a problem with.

Thanks Xata. With the system in the photo one sometimes hd to share part of the line with other phone numbers so there was some listening-in happening. What is in this photo is very early in telecoms. About a Km from here to the right of the photo is a 75m high tower which carried the now abandoned microwave radio link system along 1300Km of natural gas pipeline. I was in the area to finalise the then state of the art mobile phone base station which uses the tower for its antenna. The gas pipeline now communicates by satellite instead of ground based comms.
