Well, they did turn into a local landmark. According to Street View they're no longer there. Off to grace the elegant backyards of their posh neighbourhood.

Thanks, Isabel. These are displayed on the fence of a nursery. I thought for a long time they were chained to prevent people stealing them for their gardens, and that may well have been the reason in the beginning, but since the display never changed over the years they may have been maintaining it as a landmark, and an advertisement of the goods inside.

I have discovered that this installation has been removed. Off to grace the backyards of their posh neighbourhood. I guess. A major work of art gone.

A good reason i deed, but not a very happy feeling to look at chained buddha smiling figures… intriguing indeed.

In a way it is sad…

He looks like Buddha?! Chained to make theft proof....?

Thanks, Dinesh. As I mentioned to Isabel, these seem to have evolved into a landmark and an advertisement of the wares sold by the nursery behind the fence.

And I just dicovered this installation is now gone. I guess they finally flogged 'em. A major work of art lost for the sake of a few dollars.

I wonder why the Buddha statues are all chained... HFF John.

The fence belongs to a nursery, Christa. Don't want people to run off with the goods. I think in the end, though, it ended up as an advertising display -- it never changed.

And I just discovered the Buddhas seem all to have been sold. This major work of art is no longer.

So you're lucky to have taken the photos before!

That's one of the important benefits of photography, isn't it? Fewer things disappear from history.
