Thanks, Rainer. I always assumed we had wires above ground here so you can restore service quicker in winter (the water main broke in front of my building once during winter and I was woken up at 3 am by jackhammers). But I see Finland puts them underground, too, and Germany isn't exactly balmy in winter. What is the the reason they're underground?

The main streets downtown have buried wires, Fred, but that's not convenient in winter. Downtown Toronto's built on quicksand, so it doesn't have many really tall buildings. Banks have really tall buildings, but they can pay the additional engineering costs.
