Canada 150 tulips

White tulips with red flames, the official tulip of Canada's sesquicentennial this year (the national colours are red and white). They look flowerier if you click the pic for the large version. Bred in the Netherlands, which has helped us out with tulips a lot.

This year is the sesquicentennial of the federation; its anniversary is celebrated on July 1; We do not for some reason celebrate the anniversary of our independence (which was made law on December 11, 1931).

An attractive variety, to be sure.

We don do tulips any more. I used to plant them, and they would flower beautifully the next year, then, fed or not, never again, or maybe one out of ten would blossom three or four years later. One year we dug them up and dried them and then forgot them for a few years, then threw them out.

I just admire tulips, Bob, and leave the work to others. Is Minnesota like Toronto -- full of public flowers in the summer, as if we're making up for all those months when the scenery consisted of white, black and brown?

John, we have flowers fairly early - May for sure, possibly April depending on the weather. Several years since we've lived up here the lilac blossoms lasted for well more than a week - this year, only a few days at most - I pretty much missed them by being in Portland for four days. The tulips are gone. Our iris and clematis are out.

Spring here usually lasts only a week or two, Bob, with flowers springing out of the ground and leaves and flowers exploding on the trees. This year's has been going on forever, though. Lots of rain this year, too. The lake is high and the island (really a peninsula) that protects Toronto Harbour is under water.

Thanks, George. I share your opinion about gardening. I have relatives who are avid gardeners, and I couldn't garden as well as they do. So I take pictures of their gardens. The tulips in the photo, however, are in a public bed ioutside the east fence of the Osgoode Hall grounds in Toronto.
