Moorhen nesting

One of our more elusive waterbirds, these moorhens have been nesting on the small island in the middle of our pond for the last ten years or so - only this year the island is underwater with the record levels of snowmelt...she seems to have built some sort of raft, moored to the reeds - they raise generally about eight offspring, which race towards you if they think you are about to scatter trout pellets on the surface - they seem to enjoy them as much as the trout. Moorhens are monomorphic so I can't tell you if this is the male or female sitting on the nest - one imagines they can tell the difference, themselves...
