A Walk Back in Time. HFF!

Grounds of Cleeve Abbey
A walk through the peaceful grounds of Cleeve Abbey near Washford.
The abbey was founded in 1191 on land granted to William de Roumare, Earl of Lincoln by Ethelred the Unready, becoming home to an order of Cisterian monks. The monks were forced to surrender the monastery in 1536 at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries by order of Henry VIII.
In later years the abbey became a country mansion but by the early 17th century it had become a farm.
George Lutterell of Dunster Castle purchased it in 1870 and carried out some major archaeological excavations, but it was returned to Crown ownership at the beginning of the 1950s to pay death duties.
It is now managed by English Heritage.
