Die Zerbrechlichkeit des Menschen - The fragility of the human being

The artwork "Centurione" by Igor Mitoraj from 1987 stands very prominently at the foot of the bridge to the Old Town Hall in Bamberg. "The artist takes his inspiration from classical masters such as Michelangelo and also adds deliberate damage to his works. The sculpture in Bamberg, for example, depicts an oversized fragment of a youthful-looking face. However, the statue is not only missing large parts of the face and the back of the head, but also both eyes. In this way, the artist alludes to both the imperfection of human nature and its fragility."
