Hi, it was taken off on purpose (the materials were probably sold with the interior fixtures and fittings in the 1950s). In Scotland they used to take the roof off to avoid having to pay tax (rates) on the property.

Taking the roof off allows water to soak through the walls and also reduces their stability. Hope life in Toronto is ok. Best wishes James
