Gandria, erstmals 1237 als 'Gandrio' erwähnt, seit 100 Jahren praktisch unverändert, wurde 2004 ein Ortsteil der Stadt Lugano. Vorher war Gandria eine selbständige politische Gemeinde.
Im Jahre 1590 hatte Gandria 330 Einwohner, um 1800 waren es noch 147, bei der Zählung von 2020 272 Einwohner.
Lange war Gandria ein Fischer- und Grenzwächterdorf, die Grenze Schweiz - Italien ist 1.5 Kilometer vom Dorf entfernt.
