With 2758 s.l.m. the Stilfserjoch is the 2nd highest Alpine pass and the highest in Italy, here at the West side. The "ensemble" of buildings on the pass is not really pleasing to the eye ;-) - scanned slide, Minolta X700
Almost each country has its own definition of altitude. Here "s.l.m.", also "m s.l.m." means "sul livello del mare" relative to a gauge in Genua, which is in Austria "müA" (Meter über Adria) relative to a gauge in Trieste, in Germany "NHN" (Normalhöhennull) relative to a gauge in Amsterdam and in Switzerland m.ü.M. (Meter über Meeresspiegel) relative to a gauge in Marseille.
