When it originally opened in 1914, the Power Station was one of the most advanced power centers in all of Europe, however it will likely be better remembered for its ornate Art Deco architecture than its technological wonder. Parts are still used, except the old transformer buildings and the Art Deco control room.

The small bunker in the centre is providing protection from the threat of falling glass if an explosion were to have ruptured the magnificent glass ceiling. It was built during the WWII.

The Zollverein colliery was an active coal mine in Essen from 1851 to 1986. It was named after the German Zollverein, founded in 1834. Today it is an architectural and industrial monument.
