Figure 10. 2018

Above: Figure 10. There were five styles of Johnny Berry down tube lettering. STYLE 2 appeared on early frames; it was created by cutting off "& Bentley" from Style 1 lettering (8). STYLE 3 down tube lettering was introduced in 1948, replacing Style 2; Style 3 was commonly used until the mid-1960s and, less often, afterwards (photo by Rick Hart). STYLE 4 lettering first appeared in 1957; it was used on down tubes as an alternative to Style 3, and was also used on top tubes in conjunction with Style 3 or Style 5 down tube lettering (photo by Bob Hovey). STYLE 5 first appeared in the early-1960s as an alternative to Styles 3 and 4 (11). After the mid-1960s, Style 5 was commonly used, appearing on 2 in every 3 frames. STYLE 6 might have been intended primarily for track frames, but was rarely, if ever, used (photo by Rick Hart).
