Phasmidae: The nymph, in its penultimate instar, has a very effective camouflage in full view looking like a bit of broken twig. Like many Phasmid species, they are a master of camouflage.

Hi Dave. This picture is after a couple of moults at home. I found it when it was laying on a leaf as in the first picture. It always amazes me how clever the camouflage is on some of the species, and it would certainly take some noticing during the day. However, after years of looking for insects, you do get an instinct to check anything which looks too "casual"! I always look closely at any bent twigs during walks, just in case, and after seeing some species in daytime rest positions, it does become easier to recognise an "imposter" generally.
