Athlete with Trophy and Medals

Athlete with Trophy and Medals
And the winner is . . . (a person or a team winning or with an award/medal/prize)--a photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.

The athlete in this real photo postcard is standing next to a pedestal that holds a trophy, and nine medals are pinned to his chest (mouse over the photo to see a close-up of the trophy and medals).

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out the inscription on the trophy (except for a possible identification of the year—1914 or 1919), and the medals haven't yielded much information either. Judging by the man's clothing and the outline of a runner in the design of one of the medals, however, I take it that he participated in running competitions or other track and field events.

Anyone else recognize this fellow (if he happens to be a famous athlete) or the type of medals he's wearing?

Do you have Photoshop or a similar program? I find that it sometimes helps to open the photo and then try every type of contrast setting, and/or the "negative" setting and anything else that is available to manipulate the image. It's not uncommon for extra detail with respect to lettering etc. to suddenly become visible.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have a freeware program called Paint.NET. I've tried all the settings and adjustments that I know about in it but wasn't able to discern any more details, unfortunately. Photoshop probably has some more tricks I could try--I'll have to check it out at some point.

I had the same sort of issue with this image of a snowshoe race in an unknown, presumably Canadian, city -- www.ipernity.com/doc/wintorbos/37198548 I could just about make out the words on the handbill being held by the man in the lighter coat, third from right, but -- beyond the word "compete" -- not quite! Nonetheless, only fooling around with Photoshop as described got me even that close.

Thanks! That's an interesting photo. Your attempt to read the words on the handbill reminds me of my tries to figure out the text on the advertising fans in my Pin the Tail on the Donkey photo. The ads on the fans might help to identify the location and maybe even the date, but I still came up empty after trying all the image editing manipulations that my software is capable of.
