Herman Jadlowker as Walther von Stolzing in "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg " Wagner Herman (Hermann) Jadlowker 1877-1953 Latvian Tenor Studied in Vienna with Josef Gänsbacher. Debut 1899 at Cologne in Kreutzer's "Nachtlager von Granada". Emperor William (Kaiser Wilhelm II) heard him and was so impressed that he offered the tenor a five-year contract at the Royal Opera in Berlin. Sang also in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Vienna, Lemberg, Prague, Budapest and Boston during the course of his career.In 1910 and 1912, he appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera .During the 1920s, he sang increasingly on the concert platform and, in 1929, he was chosen to be chief cantor at the Riga synagogue. Jadlowker subsequently became a voice teacher at the Riga Conservatory before emigrating to Palestine with his wife in 1938. He taught in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, dying in the latter city at the age of 75.

There he took part in many world premieres as Scindia in Massenet's "La Roi De Lahore" 1877 , Severe in Gounod's "Polyeucte" 1878 ,Ben Said in Gounod's "Le Tribute de Zamora ' 1880 ,Malatesta in Thomas's 'Francoise de Rimini" 1880 , and in 1883 the title role of Saint Saens "Henry VIII". He sang at Covent Garden 1879 , 1880 and 1881 and again between 1883-1891.In 1891 he made his Metropolitan Debut as Nelusko in Meyerbeer's "L'Africane". He sang Carmen (Escamillo) at the Opéra-Comique on December 11, 1890, for the erection of the monument to the memory of Bizet.

LOUISE THEO ( Cécile Piccolo) (1854-1922) French Soprano After a convent schooling she married and began a theatrical career, including a tour to Vienna where she was spotted by Offenbach. The composer engaged her at the Théâtre de la Renaissance to create the title roles in Pomme d'api and La jolie parfumeuse (1873). She followed these with Cupidon in Orphée aux enfers, La Princesse de Trébizonde, La petite muette, La Timbale and Madame l'archiduc (after which she toured to London with Daubray), at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens.She went on to sing in the premiere of Fleur d'Oranger at the Théâtre des Nouveautés in 1878 and sang Cendrillon at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in 1879, and Rataplan and Le Tour du Cadran at the Théâtre des Variétés in 1880. Other creations included Adam et Eve in 1881, Mlle Boniface in 1883, Dix jours aux Pyrénées in 1887 and Mimi in 1888. Théo visited America in 1883 to appear at the Fifth Avenue Theater, and then toured; she returned the following year, appearing in François les bas-bleus, La fille du tambour-major and Giroflé-Girofla.

Giovanni Zucchini (1812-1891); Italian bass-baritone. In his hometown Bologna he studied singing with Britti and in 1832 he made his debut in Modena. In 1838 he sang successfully in Venice and then in Bologna and in Genua. In 1848 he made guest appearances at the Teatro San Carlos at Lisbon. From 1855 until 1865 he was the "first buffo-singer" at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris. In 1863 at the Teatro Municipale Piacenza he sang at the première of Ponchielli's opera "Roderico Re dei Goti". From 1868/71 he made guest appearances at St.Petersburg and Warsaw and during the season 1875/76 at the Wiener Hofoper. In 1877 at La Scala Milan he performed the role of Bartolo in a legendary performance of Rossini 's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia", in which Giovanni Zucchini, Adelina Patti, Ernesto Nicolini and Leone Giraldoni enthralled the Scala audience. At the age of 14, she made her début as a pianist, and two years later appeared for the first time in opera at Vienna. She eventually obtained a permanent engagement at the Royal Opera in that city. In 1861 she made her debut as Priestess in Gluck’s “Iphigenie auf Tauris” at Vienna. She was one of the leading singers at the Vienna “Hofoper” but she had a very short career. In 1867 she married businessman Julius Ritter von Gompertz and retired from the stage. She continued singing at concerts in London, Frankfurt a.M., Leipzig, Aachen and Vienna. She was a famous interpretor of the “Lieder” of Johannes Brahms.
