They approach any boat coming because they are used to get some pieces of bread from people aboard.

They are familiar with boats: sometimes they get pieces of bread from people aboard.

This is a tributary of River Guadiana. The boat tour makes a short detour upstream the confluence. On the right side of the image you can see the hillside topped by Mértola Castle.

On the left bank of River Guadiana, at Mértola. It was installed within the shooting of the movie "Floating House", by the Brazilian director José Nascimento. It was about a woman from an Amazon tribe (whose daughter had been killed by loggers), who decided to leave Brazil with her granddaughter and her husband, a former miner in Mértola, to live here, in a floating house on Guadiana riverside, to educate her granddaughter according to the traditions of their tribe. The movie was concluded right before the pandemic, and exhibited since March 2022.

This is the upstream limit of navigation on River Guadiana, at Mértola. On low-tide boats cannot go this far and the weir between the watermills becomes visible.
The hours of departure of boat tours depend on when tide is high enough.

Interior of the Mother Church of Mértola, located at Church Square, in the historic centre. Formerly it was a mosque, until it was adapted to church in 1238, after the conquest of Mértola to the Moors. On the right, it's the main entrance. The altar is on the right side as you enter, because it's on Mecca's direction, as when it was a mosque.

Mural of the miner and the rat.

A surprising partnership: rats live in the mines' galleries but, when they detect letal gas, they leave at once the affected galleries, thus alerting the miners, who procede the same way.
This mural is displayed in the access to the fluvial beach of Mina de São Domingos.
