TO0035 NED HANLON ET AL.

TO0035 NED HANLON ET AL.
Posted March 5, 1911 from Toronto to England. (I was seeking this card for a few years before I found one for sale.)

As the Writer says on the reverse; "These are some sporting men of Canada. No doubt you have heard of some of them - especially the Running Man in the front of the car. They were out for a spin."

Front row, beside the driver, is the "Running Man", Tom Longboat. Longboat is probably Canada's most famous long-distance runner. Early in his career, in 1907 he stunned the world by winning the Boston Marathon - shaving over 5 minutes off the previous record time. A First Nations man from a reserve just south of Brantford, Tom was a member of the Onondaga Nation.

In the back row, left to right are; Ned Hanlan - the greatest rower of his time, Eddie Durnam and Lou Scholes - outstanding scullers of the day.

Alan Mays, wintorbos have particularly liked this photo

Maybe one of Hanlan's sons? Looks not unlike images of the young Hanlan.
