A photo from the 3rd day of the rather shortlived 2022 Meradalir eruption- fog and rainclouds drifting in from the sea.

After 2021 (Geldingadalir) and 2022 (Meradalir), Fagradalsfjall started its 3rd eruption on 10th July, this time a bit further north at Litli Hrútur. After 6 days it has already built a sizeable cone with lava fountains, a lava tube and a lava river and has joined up with the old lavas from 2021/22. This year's eruption is not big but more powerful than the precdeding ones.
The lava is nearly 1200°C hot and mantle derived, it comes from a depth of 17-20 km.

Großen Dank, Udo! Naja, ich fürchte, die Unbelehrbaren sagen, ist doch gut, durch die ganzen Gase wird's vielleicht kühler, dann müssen wir nichts machen....Oder sie denken, wenn der Vulkan so viel Dreck ausstößt, fällt unserer doch nicht ins Gewicht;-)

Aber im Ernst, das hier ist was ganz Normales- Island liegt auf dem mittelatlantischen Rücken, die Platten driften auseinander und der Spalt wird von unten wieder aufgefüllt.

Hast Recht Gudrun, aber für das allgemeine Wohlergehen wäre es sicher günstiger wenn der Spalt in so manchen Regierungen und in manchen Hirnen Beteiligter etwas mehr geschlossen würde... NS.: Bin kein AfD Wähler

They will manage:-) I hope the new Lisbon airport isn't going to be built where they proposed to build it- because it's an area where a lot of rare and protected Icelandic birds overwinter...Our tour guide last year is in nature conservation and went to Lisbon with others to protest against this.

Indeed, the webcam view is addictive, especially when it's darker and the lava glows....
There is nobody living nearby, Reykjavík is more than 30km away and they have stuck gas detectors everywhere around the eruption;-)

Schönen Dank, Reiner! Das war in sicherer Entfernung und die Windrichtung hat gepasst. Die sperren die Zugänge, wenn's kritisch werden könnte, der isländische Katastrophenschutz ist da hochprofessionell und arbeitet eng mit den Wissenschaftlern zusammen. Auf den Kanaren oder in Italien hätte ich da weniger Vertrauen (in die Geologen schon, aber nicht in die Behörden;-)

Bei dieser Eruption werden wohl allenfalls Bewerber um den Darwin-Award zu Schaden kommen. Manche Idioten hören nicht auf die Rettungskräfte und versuchen auf den ausbrechenden Krater zu klettern oder spazieren auf der frischen Lava rum....
