Werkbundsiedlung 1927: Einfamilienhaus von Hans Scharoun

Weißenhofsiedlung was built in record time in 1927 as part of the Werkbund exhibtion about new forms of building. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was responsible for the project for which 16 renowned architects (among them Le Corbusier with Pierre Jeanneret, Mart Stam, Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius, Max and Bruno Taut, J.J.P.Oud, Hans Scharoun and Mies v.d.Rohe himself) designed houses.
Of the original 21 houses 11 are left, most of the others were destroyed in WWII bombing raids, among them the ones by Gropius and Taut. But the war thankfully also stopped Nazi plans to demolish all houses of what they called "Araberdorf" (Arab village).
In 1958 Weißenhofsiedlung got protected status, in 2016 the Le Corbusier buildings were awarded UNESCO World Heritage status..

Schönen Dank, Udo! Das ist noch einer der "zugänglichsten" Entwürfe;-) Mir gefallen die Häuser, aber wohnen wollte ich nicht drin, denn die haben meist Einbaumöbel (von 1927) und man darf nichts verändern.

Thanks very much, Keith! Compared to some of today's buildings they are very modern indeed. A little later the Nazis encouraged the so called "Stuttgart style" with what we would call a retro look - gabled brick rooves, windows with shutters etc., all very Biedermeier!

Dank dir, poly! Ja, ziemlich bauhausig, oft mit Einbaumöbeln! Die Häuser sind heute alle vermietet, aber die Bewohner dürfen die Originale nicht verändern. Es sieht aber schon seltsam aus, wenn im Mies-Wohnblock die Baumarkt-Möbel auf den Balkonen stehen;-)

Besten Dank, Nouchet! Die Weißenhofsiedlung war nicht alleine, Dessau mit dem Bauhaus, Berlin, es gab viele solcher Bauten damals. Nicht alle haben das Dritte Reich unbeschadet überstanden:-(

Scharoun war mir vor allem als Architekt der Berliner Philharmonie bekannt, aber in seinen späten Jahren hat er etliche Hochhäuser in unserer Gegend "verbrochen".

Ja, es lohnt sich wirklich, die Schminke-Villa anzusehen.
Man wird mit einem Audioguide hindurchgeführt und jedes Detail wird erklärt.
Man merkt, dass der Architekt alles bis ins Detail durchgeplant und auf die Bedürfnisse der Familie Schminke abgestimmt hat!

Thank you so much, Amelia! It's amazing that such architecture can still lead to discussions nearly a 100 years later:-) I rather like Bauhaus but I wouldn't want to live in one of the houses because of the inbuilt furniture you aren't allowed to change.

We often see houses still being built like this, especially in coastal regions. Although I prefer older style architecture for living in myself, I can appreciate this style and it has many followers.

Thanks very much, Rosa! The houses belong to the municipality and are rented out. There's never a shortage of people wanting to live there even with all the restrictions these listed buildings bring with them.
