Sju søstre

Sju søstre
The Seven Sisters are a mountain range shaped by glaciers. They are situated on Alsta Island south of Sandnessjøen.
Like Hestmannen and Torghatten, the Seven Sisters are the stuff of legends bronn.no/engelsk/index.php/the-legend-of-torghatten

It would be interesting to know just how many "seven sisters" there are in the world- I know of at least one more: a waterfall in Geiranger Fjord:-)

There is an area of London called Seven Sisters, but that was derived from Seven Sisters Road, which runs through it. So that is a second-hand naming - there is not a topographical feature with seven matching features. The origin of the name seems to come from Greek legend via astronomy, so my web searches tell me! So groupings of seven similar features seem to acquire that name. Although in the case of a Welsh colliery, the mineowner had seven daughters, who he named the mine after.

Thanks, of course I've also heard of the London Seven Sisters- not the Welsh mine though! Now you've got me searching too. There's a German only Wiki- entry de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sieben_Schwestern which lists even more seven sisters.-)

The Pleiades are also traditionally the seven sisters--at least in pre-telescopic days!

Thanks a lot, Steve! The Pleiades are one of the few constellations I'm actually able to recognize;-)
