Cambridge - Orchard Terrace from SE 2013-06-05

Cambridge - Orchard Terrace from SE 2013-06-05
A development of c.1825 on land owned by Charles Humfrey, banker, architect and sometime mayor of Cambridge, whose own house stood to the south, on the left of the photo [Sara Payne, Down your street: Cambridge past and present, vol. 2 (1984), pp.30-32]. It is said that the cottages were designed with first-floor windows on the north side only so as not to overlook Humfrey's garden; presumably Humfrey was the architect although his involvement is not mentioned by the listing (list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1331895) or by the RCHM (www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/cambs/pp358-391, item 263).
