The Slatfords

There are many traditions in human burial, mostly originating in scripture. The Christian tradition of placing the coffin in the grave with the head to the west originates with Christ coming from the east; the deceased will be ready to see the light when it comes. For practical reasons the tradition is not always followed, but it is a good indication if you want to establish your bearings when you are in a strange place.
An unusual feature of this memorial is the absence of birth and death dates. Also the inscription might be considered to be upside down, given the slope of the stone.
God bless Edward, Mary, and William James. RIP.
