Thanks Steve; what a friendly and welcome comment. A firm called Adana used to make small printing presses for hobby printers. There was quite a lot of hardware and little lead letters also involved. The operation was therapeutic but its space requirement eventually took over your home. These small grub screws were used to lock all the assembled letters tightly into a metal frame called a chase. Then it could be safely raised to the vertical plane and inserted into the printing machine.

My favourite shop in Lewes (and it has some stiff competition from bookshops) is the Architypographus Tom Paine Printing Press on the high street. It smells of printers in and produces some beautiful litle posters. The printer was a bit grumpy and complained of lack of space, and said no, he didn't do comissions, but I like a surly approach, so still enjoyed it all.
