Hillersleben - Kloster

Hillersleben Abbey was probably founded as a nunnery in the second half of the 10th century. After it had been destroyed by a Slav invasion around the year 1000, Archbishop Gero von Magdeburg had the monastery rebuilt in 1022. In 1096, Bishop Herrand von Halberstadt settled it with Benedictine monks from Ilsenburg.
During the Battle of Hillersleben in 1550, the monastery was destroyed and plundered. In 1577 the convention joined the Augsburg Confession. In 1628-1632 the monastery became Catholic again, after which the Magdeburg Cathedral Chapter took possession of it. In 1687 the monastery estate was converted into a Prussian domain, owned by the Electors of Brandenburg. The church decays. In 1788 the east part of the church was torn down, in 1810 the Romanesque west facade collapsed. Between 1859 and 1880 the church was rebuilt. The building also fell into disrepair during the time of the GDR, so the renovation lasted for twenty years after the end of the GDR.
