Alessano - Chiesa Madre di San Salvatore

In Norman times Alessano assumed a prominent role over the entire Capo di Leuca. In that period the city, that today has a population of about 6000, became a bishopric.
The collegiate church of San Salvatore dates back to the second half of the 18th century. It replaced a Romanesque cathedral built between 1150 and 1200. The erection of the new church actually took 80 years. It was completed in 1845. As the bishopric was suppressed in 1818 the church was no cathedral, but a collegiate church.
