Solignac-sur-Loire - Saint-Vincent

Saint-Vincent, the parish church of Solignac-sur-Loire, was erected, when next to the church was a large castle only one wall of that castle (left) still remains on the graveyard. The church got rebuilt, ruined, renovated a couple of times, so that today only one large wall of the church dates to the 12th century.

The facade, seen here, was "recreated" after the vandals of the French Revolution had severely damaged the church. In the 19th century, the population got really pious (again), feeling sowmehow ashamed of what had happened. When in 1906 government officers tried to inspect the church for an inventory, it came to a riot, as the parishioners crowded here and kicked the officers out. The priest had to calm the rioters down, after the communion table had broken under the pressure.
