The rock houses were carved into a sandstone escarpment above Kinver the first record of them is about 1770, at their peak 11 families lived in them the last residents leaving in the 1950's after which they fell into disrepair and were in danger of collapsing, the National Trust bought them and have restored 3 of them, given the conditions in the towns life there would have been quite pleasant the air was clean and they could grow fruit and vegetables.
It is thought that the inspiration for the Hobbits may have come from the rock house Tolkien lived in Birmingham and Kinver was a popular day out easily reached by train and tram.
